Venezuela Seeks First World Baseball Classic Title in Potential Final Clash with United States

The 2026 World Baseball Classic reaches its championship phase at loanDepot Park in Miami Gardens, Florida, with semifinal action set for March 17 and the final on March 18.[1][2]

Venezuela, appearing in their sixth WBC, has yet to claim the title, with quarterfinal appearances marking their best results in 2009 and 2023.[3] The team is managed by Omar López and features players such as catcher Salvador Pérez of the Kansas City Royals, infielder Maikel García also of the Royals, third baseman Eugenio Suárez of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and pitcher Daniel Palencia of the Chicago Cubs.[4][5][6]

Team USA, winners in 2017, reached the 2023 final at the same venue but fell 3-2 to Japan after Shohei Ohtani struck out Mike Trout with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.[7][8] Key players include Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper and prospect Roman Anthony of the Boston Red Sox system.[9]

Venezuela and the United States share Pool B alongside Mexico, Italy and Great Britain, all played at loanDepot Park.[1] The two nations met in the 2023 quarterfinals, where USA prevailed 9-7.[10]

The tournament, broadcast on FOX, FS1, FS2 and FOX Deportes, builds on 2023's record viewership, where the final averaged 3.02 million viewers and peaked at 4.85 million.[11] Past WBCs featured highlights like Czech pitcher Ondřej Satora's standing ovation from Japanese fans at Tokyo Dome in 2023 and Italy's espresso machine home run celebration.[12]
