Trump says keeping Pete Rose out of Hall of Fame is a 'disservice'

Trump Calls Rose Hall Exclusion a Disservice

President Donald Trump said Friday that Major League Baseball has done Pete Rose a disservice by keeping him out of the Hall of Fame. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump stated Rose should have been inducted long ago for his on-field achievements. He spoke days after MLB removed Rose from its ineligible list.

Rose, baseball's hit leader known as "Charlie Hustle," died in September 2024 at age 83 from hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. He admitted in 2004 to gambling on Cincinnati Reds games while a player and manager, always betting on his team to win. Ten days before his death, Rose predicted he would enter the Hall only posthumously, if at all.

Trump posted on Truth Social in March 2025 that he planned to pardon Rose, noting his records for most hits and most wins managed in baseball history. Trump and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred met in April 2025 on Rose's Hall candidacy. Manfred removed Rose from the ineligible list in May 2025, citing Trump among several voices supporting the move.

Manfred told owners that month he respected Trump's advice but considered many inputs. Posthumous Hall of Fame election now becomes possible for Rose.
