Angie Griffin, a female competitor in U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS), told Fox News Digital that a grievance has been filed against her for referring to a transgender athlete as "a man" on a USMS community forum.[1]
USMS confirmed in a statement to Fox News Digital that a grievance has been filed by an individual member related to the USMS Code of Conduct.[1][2]
"U.S. Masters Swimming does not comment on individual member matters, including complaints or disciplinary processes," the organization said. "We can confirm that a grievance has been filed by an individual member, not by U.S. Masters Swimming, related to the USMS Code of Conduct. As with all such matters, it is being handled in accordance with our established review processes."[1]
Griffin said the grievance could lead to the removal of her USMS records and recognition, and that she has hired representation to contest it. She stated she filed a motion to dismiss, providing evidence that her comments were not bullying but factual information publicly available.[1]
Griffin has previously spoken about competing against a transgender athlete at a USMS meet in San Antonio in May 2025, where she said she learned the athlete's birth sex only after the event.[1]
USMS, the national governing body for adult swimmers aged 18 and over in the United States, updated its gender eligibility policy in June 2025 to restrict biological males from competing in women's events. The policy was revised again in February 2026 to address state and local nondiscrimination laws, clarifying eligibility in the men's/open category for all competitors regardless of sex or gender identity.[1][2]
The updated policy states: "All members who select the men’s/open category are eligible for National Recognition Programs in the men’s/open category, regardless of sex, gender, or gender identity/expression."[1]
